Marginalia are the notes in the margin of a book, manuscript or letter. Marginalia refers to thoughts, ideas and “imaginary dialogues” between reader & writer, artist & observer, ideas on the fringes and new dialogue possibilities. Marginalia, is a lifestyle gallery, seeking to create a dialogue space for creative professionals and culture customers. For Marginalia, this includes people on the margins of lide, traditionally ingored groups representing various lifestyles and flavours of existence, as well as people who simply think differently. In its space, Marginalia provides its community with a full spectrum of art, educational, cultural, culinary and lifestyle experiences. These experiences are offered via the holistic food served in the café, the luxury eco-ethical fashion and home accessories sourced from family or women owned businesses and the exhibition of international contemporary art and photography. To support this full spectrum concept, Marginalia also offers several thematic soirées to facilitate dialogues and awareness around global culture. Marginalia is a shared passion for creating a more ethical, passionate and creative world.
In line with the first phase of AKKA’s process, Appreciate, we have engaged with a number of different groups of people in a series of community consultations to collectively uncover the culture of Marginalia’s community, existing and yet to be shaped. Through consultations with Marginalia’s founders, advisors, artists and potential visitors, we have uncovered the Purpose, the Why, the Values, the How and the What of the gallery’s concept. It is from there that a shared vision can emerge, allowing us to translate Marginalia’s unique concept into a space design, that not only communicates Marginalia’s vision but also acts as an active catalyst to foster the interactions of Marginalia’s community.
